Book Review: All Our Worldly Goods by Irene Nemirovsky

ALL OUR WORLDLY GOODS is rightly considered to be the companion novel to SUITE FRANCAISE. No one writes about World War II like Némirovsky, who lived through it and perished in Auschwitz. I liked AOWG better because it's more hopeful, and differs from SF in scope. At once both smaller in scale (focusing on two families) and grander (covering both WWI and WWII), it reminds us of the things worth fighting for: A cup of coffee and freshly sliced bread in the morning. The sanctity of routine, of the civic duty to keep calm and carry on despite all of civilization crumbling away.
